Well I finally jumped over and bought an Ipod Touch. I have been using my Palm Zire 71 for more than 5 years and thought it's time to get an upgrade (better graphics, sleeker, lighter, newer and more apps, higher memory, etc).
So was it worth the shift? Yes and no.
First the MINUSESWiFi Needed. You cannot make use of the full functionality of the Ipod Touch without WiFi. I have been using my Palm to read books and store some Word or Excel files by using Docs to Go. Syncing the files to the Palm is a breeze using the USB connected cradle. With the Ipod Touch, you CANNOT sync files via USB cable. It can only be done by WiFi. Since I don't have WiFi, I have to email files to myself or store them in the net, then look for a hotspot before I can download the files to my Ipod Touch.
Palm with Docs to Go makes it easy for me to bring my files anywhere. I can edit it on my Palm and sync it to the computer so I have the latest copy. I'm still figuring out how to do this on the Touch.
Other stuff I need to figure out...
- I also use my Palm to keep track of my expenses using Splash Money. How do I do this on the Ipod Touch? I feel secure that the info on my Palm is backed up in my computer when I sync it.
- How do I type notes on my computer and sync it to my Ipod Touch? Palm has a "Desktop" application and anything I update there (like notes, calendar, address book) get sync to my Zire.
Limited Bluetooth. Bluetooth is not fully functional. You can only use bluetooth for earphones, that's it. You cannot use it to transfer files. I cannot transfer photo from my phone to the ipod touch. I cannot compose a long text on the ipod touch and send it to my phone.
Organization. With Palm you can easily organize the apps. You create a category and all the related apps are grouped there. In the Ipod touch, you have 16 apps per page and if you don't remember where the app is, you need to swipe through to find it.
Now the PLUSESBetter Apps. With Palm losing popularity, app developers have moved to other devices. Apple Store has a plethora of apps to choose from. Games are just too numerous to mention.
Ebook reading with Stanza. I have been using my Palm to read ebooks. With the Ipod Touch, I have installed Stanza and liked it because of the scalability of the fonts. Page turning is also very a breeze. You only have to tap or swipe. Kudos to the developer of Stanza.
WiFi Connectivity. Having Ipod Touch with WiFi connection is unbeatable. With the little thing on the palm of your hand, you can connect to the net, check your email, browse the web, check on your friends in facebook.
